Lisbon

We made it to Portugal! It’s so weird to be in a country neither of us has ever been to where we can get by but definitely don’t speak the language. It’s very different from the way we are able to communicate in Spain and Italy. Our flight from Madrid was delayed and in that process Sofia connected with Daniel who is from Lisbon but lives in Manchester, and he ended up personally escorting us from the airport to Rossio square where we are staying! He was the sweetest and most welcoming.

After checking in to the Lisbon Story Guesthouse, we walked up to Chapitô by the Castelo de São Jorge because supposedly there was a weekly Sunday party with good food and wine, but there was none tonight. So we went back down to the Baixa-Chado neighborhoods to an amazing place recommended to us called Artis (on Rúa do Diario de Noticias) where we ate Portugese sausage, fish soup, cod, and “black pork on a stick.” So good. We also met a great Italian couple from Napoli (of course!!) Raffaela & Daniele and ended up chatting since our tables were 3 inches away from each other.

We will see them again when they come to LA for their honeymoon next year. Congrats Raffa & Daniele!

Lisbon Story Guesthouse, an adorable welcoming place to stay with beautiful unique rooms right off Rossio Square. Our room, Luz, has a great view. Breakfast, kitchen, great music playing in the hangout living room space, super nice people (Maria pictured below). Highly recommend it!

Rossio Square, our first view of Lisbon after popping up out of the Metro. We really only heard French, Spanish, Italian, English and German on the evening streets though. Is everyone else a tourist too or studying abroad?

In Madrid we got to spend the night with Gustavo, Sofia’s friend from when she lived in Spain. Til next time!
