Going Beyond

As almost all of the pilgrims we met completed their journey on El Camino (if it’s ever completed) in Santiago, Sammy and I prepared to walk on to the sea, the end of the earth, Fisterra, or Finisterre (called by both names here).

As we left the comforts of city life and the familiar hustle and bustle and crowds of Santiago (which is actually a beautiful city), as our bodies clicked into their familiar stride, we began to breathe a little deeper. The space around us expanded into tall hillscapes again, lined by trees. We walked through eucalyptus groves with a kind of tropical humidity that came with the pleasant rain of morning. We walked beyond — beyond Santiago, beyond the usual itinerary, beyond the Cathedral, beyond what most pilgrims walk.

We were the only pilgrims walking for a while.

We thought about how symbolic that is of our marriage, or of what we want our marriage (and our lives) to be: going beyond what we think is possible. Beyond the constraints of our minds. Beyond what’s imaginable.

We want to imagine beyond.

So now we take the next four days to walk to Fisterra.

It feels right to continue our walk.

To see what’s just around the bend. To be in the cathedral of the earth a little longer…

Here’s to following our own heartbeat, as it takes us a little further.
