Hello! So happy you found our travel blog.
We are Sofia Rose Smith and Sammy Lyon {Lyon & Rose}.
The story of us goes a little like this: we met one fateful summer eleven years ago (in 2005)!
We were just babies at the time, in college. Both feminists with justice in our hearts, we had dedicated our summer vacations to doing activist work at a non-profit in LA.
There was magic. There was attraction. There was awkwardness and blunders.
Sofia fell hard for Sammy. Sammy fell for Sofia too, but also played a little hard to get.
We had a summer romance…but Sammy didn’t want to get too serious and kinda crushed Sofia’s heart.
But don’t worry, she set good boundaries. 🙂 She said, “listen, I can’t pretend to just be your friend. I really like you. I can’t hang out with you though cuz it hurts too much.”
Sammy respected her decision and promised to be there anytime Sofia wanted to pick up the phone and call.
So, a few years passed. We dated {lots of} other people, travelled, graduated college, grew, blossomed, got way smarter and cooler.
And then, Cupid’s arrow came through again four years later (in 2009).
Fate brought us together again, and this time, with a LOT more in common and a LOT more maturity.
We saw each other once, and that was it. We both knew in our hearts that we were with “the one.”
Even if it wasn’t going to work out, seeing Sammy again reminded Sofia of what Love felt like. And that was the best gift ever.
Fast forward six years, to last summer (2015): we tied the knot!
We had a beautiful, sacred ceremony in the Topa Topa mountains. We spoke poetic vows to one another. Let the wind kiss our shoulders. And then danced the night away before falling into our honeymoon suite {an Airstream trailer on the land} and rolling out of bed for coffee and donuts with our loved ones.
Our honeymoon trip was the ancient Spanish pilgrimage, El Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

I’m a trans/genderqueer educator, trainer, and director of the Green Ambassadors Institute, an environmental justice learning lab of Environmental Charter Schools. I lead workshops on supporting youth leadership and community-based learning, and work directly with students and teachers to design education programs that are both innovative and ecologically just.
