Day Five: 12.6 miles + Descending

Today we walked from Foncebadón to Molinaseca. It was DOWNhill! And so long.

First we took our time at the best albergue ever, Monte Irago in Foncebadón where we met the awesome David from Barcelona.

The Cruz de Ferro is an important part of the Camino. It’s an ancient iron cross on a wooden pole, and people leave rocks by it–prayers for their safety on the Camino, and I’m sure for loved ones and their reasons for walking.

On the way to the Cruz de Ferro.

A beautiful Refugio just outside of Manjarin.
Kittens!!!

A donativo in the forest.

Then we stopped at a bar, a stand by the side of the road coming out of the forest, and had cafe con leche and tortilla espanola–our regular second breakfast. We met Antonio and Tristan, an adorable father son team from Philly who started in St Jean. Tristan’s dad, Antonio, is from Spain and teaches middle school Spanish. Tristan is 16, filming everything w his Rebel T3i and making a documentary–when carrying everything on your back, weight is everything!

After the coffees, we stopped at Alto Altar–the highest point on the Camino at 1,515 meters.

At 5:30pm we made it to Molinaseca, where everyone was swimming in the river!! We took a dip in our underwear “bathing suits” and at the recommendation of Ana, a local who gave us a ride into town from the albergue, we ate at Casa Ramón and had incredible food from Bierzo, this region.
